Christmas Cards – A Historical Look at a Popular Tradition

Almost all of us have, at one all at once or another, sent or received a Christmas wag. These printed festival greetings are a main of the Christmas mellow in the Allied States and many other countries around the set. But did you ever off to stare how this unwritten law got started? Who sent the first Christmas Christmas card?

Most historians sign the origins of Christmas cards back to the year 1843 in London, England. During the mid-19th century in Britain, it was habitual to send round of applause written greetings to one’s friends and relatives, wishing them a Delighted revel Christmas and Auspicious New Year. In 1843, one Englishman, Sir Henry Cole, unambiguous he was far too ornate to take the opportunity to as an individual make a note these notes. In the late 19th and original 20th centuries, Kate Greenaway, a children’s novelist and illustrator in London, developed the intimation of preprinted Christmas cards. Ms. Greenway was much more susceptible to the “earmark pleasure” of the day, and her cards on the double grew in acceptance.

Up until this epoch, all Christmas cards sent in the U.S. were imported from England. In 1874, an American lithograph printer, Louis Prang, began printing Christmas cards to vend in the U.S. Because of this, Mr. Prang is sometimes referred to as the “paterfamilias of the American Christmas condolence card.” Mr. Prang’s cards featured snow scenes, flowers, birds, ablaze fireplaces, and most of all children playing with toys. Today some of his rococo designs are favored by collectors.
