When people send congrats cards, should I mail a thank you or is email fine?

I am decidedly mailing thank you cards to those that sent gifts and made food for us since our daughter was born. However, what is an appropriate response to those who have sent congratulatory cards without presents? Do I send a card (nay?) Or is alright grateful email (easier!). Thank you all.

e-mail! sending a certain strength for a map is a) weird because it's like giving a gift for a present, and then they might feel compelled to have to send something back or say something thing ... "thank you for the thank you for the congrats ....?"

e-mail is less formal but still - pleasantly. is nice to find a "warm thank you" in the midst of all these business and e-mails cell phone bill.
